Which Guns and Ammo Are Best for Home Protection?

Which Guns and Ammo Are Best for Home Protection?

In the event of a break in, you want to be prepared to take on whatever criminal has broken into your home – whether they’re robbers, murderers, or rapists. You can be prepared for this by having firearms ready, loaded with the right ammo.

First, you’re going to want to get a firearm. There are so many options, it may be a little scary at first. If this is your first time ever getting a gun, you should get a .22lr rifle to start with.

Some people want to dive right in to the larger calibers, like .50AE Desert Eagles. However, this is a bad idea. You should start off on something simple, inexpensive, and trustworthy.

One of the best options for this is a Ruger 10/22 rifle. They’re extremely common, and only about $300. You can pick one up at any sporting goods store. You would want to take this to the range, practice, and maybe even buy some lessons.

Ammo for .22lr is also very cheap. Once you have some experience with guns, you’re going to want to make your next purchase. For home defense, a shotgun is an extremely good purchase.

A solid 12 gauge like the Mossberg 590 will run you anywhere from $400 to $450. The reason that shotguns are good for home defense is that they have spread, are easy to use, and are versatile.

When you hear a break-in during the night, you’re going to have adrenaline rushing. A handgun, while effective, may be harder to aim and land a shot when you’re shaking and panicked.

With a shotgun, you will have an easier time hitting your target, because the pellets will spread out. Some may be put off by the lower ammo capacity of a shotgun, but consider that each shell contains what is essentially eight bullets.

There are even some revolvers out there that will shoot .410 shotgun shells, such as the Taurus Judge or the Smith and Wesson Governor – though those will be more expensive.

Handguns are also a good option for home defense. You can get a variety of 9mm handguns, but you want to make sure they’re from a trusted brand, such as Glock, Smith and Wesson, Beretta, H&K (even though they’re a bit more expensive), etc.

You’re going to want to check around online and see what others have said about companies you don’t recognize, such as Bryco, Cobra, Rohm, etc. because they may be prone to failure, and the last thing you want is your gun failing on you when you need it.

All of these guns are great, but they can be really dangerous while defending your home without using proper ammunition. If you’re using high penetration 9mm, there’s a good chance it will exit the criminal and go through your walls, possibly hurting people you don’t want it to.

You can purchase low recoil 12 gauge ammo for $0.34 a round, which is a very nice price. The low recoil means it also has lower velocity, and once it penetrates the criminal, it will have lost most of its speed and will not penetrate the wall behind them.

Non Lethal Personal Protection Options

Non Lethal Personal Protection Options

Protecting yourself is one of the most basic human instincts, and in the dangerous world we live in today, it’s important to know how to do it. However, you may not always want to kill or seriously wound your attacker.

There are many ways to protect yourself in a non-lethal way, including stun guns, Tasers, and pepper spray. Stun guns are one of the most common forms of self-defense.

A stun gun usually has two prongs on the end of it that transmit a non-lethal dose of electricity through them. These stun guns are effective because they take advantage of how the human body actually works.

Your body’s cells use electricity to communicate with your brain and muscles. Sending an extra jolt of electricity through your body causes your muscles to contract and expand against their will.

This is ultimately harmless, but at the time, will be very painful and immobilizing for your attacker. The most common stun gun company is Vipertek, and they make many reliable and inexpensive stun guns available on Amazon.

The other most common form of self-defense is pepper spray. Pepper spray is, as the name implies, a spray infused with pepper and other chemicals, notably oleoresin capsicum, or OC.

OC is derived from cayenne peppers, and it works even better than tear gas, because tear gas won’t always stop victims who feel less pain, such as drunks and druggies. OC will cause temporary blindness and restrict the victim’s breathing, while not cutting it off completely.

The blindness will last at least 15 minutes – 30 at most. The burning feeling lasts 45 to 60 minutes, the coughing from it getting in your lungs lasts up to 15 minutes. These combined factors give you more than enough time to make your escape while your attacker is incapacitated.

One of the best companies for pepper spray is SABRE. SABRE is used by some of the largest police forces, including NYPD, LAPD, and Chicago PD. SABRE combines the tear gas mentioned earlier with the OC to create a perfect defense weapon.

It also includes a UV dye, so that the suspect can later be identified by holding up a UV light, without him knowing that he’s been marked. You can also get a pepper gel from SABRE, which works the same as pepper spray, but it sticks to your attacker, making it safer to use indoors.

Pepper spray may be a better first line of defense over the stun guns, due to the fact that they have a much longer range. Finally, there is the least common form of self-defense – a Taser.

Taser is a company that makes an advanced, long range version of the stun gun. Tasers are legal in 45 states, so make sure you check the legality of Tasers in yours. A Taser is a small weapon that fires two little prongs, much like the prongs attached to the stun gun, which stick into the victim and shock them.

For non-law enforcement consumers, the maximum range for a Taser is 15 feet. This is still plenty of room, and the Taser will lay anyone and anything out completely. It’s essentially a much more effective stun gun.

The only downside to the Taser is its price tag. A Taser will usually run you about as much as a regular gun costs. However, this does not stop them from being very effective pieces of self-defense technology and it’s perfect for those who have a moral problem killing another person, even in self defense.

Storing Proper Protection in Your Home

Storing Proper Protection in Your Home

Whether you only own one for home defense or you’re a collector, you’re going to need a place to store your firearms. Of course, you don’t want to leave them out where anyone can access them.

You want them to be safe and secure. The best way to ensure that your guns are kept in a safe place is to buy a gun safe. Gun safes can come in all kinds of sizes, but you want to make sure you get one that fits your needs.

For example, if you only own a handgun, it’d be a waste of space and money to buy a huge safe with room for 5 rifles and 6 handguns and boxes of ammo. So when shopping for a safe, the first thing you want to check is that it will contain all of your firearms.

You don’t want to go too small and have to leave a pistol out, or have to jam it in there in an unsafe manner. So get something of a reasonable size for your amount of firearms.

Next, you want to make sure it’s quickly accessible. Now, this doesn’t mean in the sense that a child can open it, but easy enough that just you can get in. If you only have a handgun, there’s a wonderful selection of gun safes for $100-$200.

One safe in particular is the Sentry Safe Biometric Pistol safe, which has three ways of opening it: a four number code, a key, and a fingerprint scanner. These make it quick and easily accessible, but only for you, so your child can’t get into it.

This safe also features a silent opening mechanism, so you don’t reveal yourself to the intruder. For collectors and avid shooters, safes can get expensive. However, it’s worth every penny to ensure that your firearms are safe, and nobody accidentally hurts themselves by getting into it.

There are some relatively low-priced safes that are also great options. For example, there’s the Stack-On 18 gun safe, only $250, and it has plenty of room for rifles, handguns, valuables, and ammo.

It’s very easy to get carried away and buy some massive safe, but it’s a poor investment if you don’t fill it and it’s hard to open. You should make sure you get what you need with a little bit of breathing room for ammo – otherwise you’ll find yourself leaving ammo out, which can also be dangerous for young children.

Home Security Best Protection

Home Security Best Protection

The thought of a burglar breaking into a home is a very scary and real fear for many people. Not only are a person’s valuables at risk, but the burglar may be dangerous and a threat to the person’s life. However, many new houses have a home security alarm system installed during construction, and even older houses are being retrofitted with a security system by home owners. These systems give a peace of mind as if there is a guardian watching over the house at all times.

What’s in a Home Security Alarm System?

A home security alarm system is most often a network of various technologies. The actual sensor that a burglar would set off might be an infrared motion detector which can detect discrepancies in movement by heat levels, meaning that a total lack of visible light would not hinder an infrared motion detector from operating. Likewise, a sensor might be a simple mechanism that triggers when doors or windows are open. Various levels of alarm include lights that turn on automatically to warn the burglar that an alarm has been triggered (and that someone is aware that the house is being broken into), a loud audio alarm that wakes anyone inside and alerts them to danger, and often an alert is sent out to the security company who installed the security system so that operators can contact the appropriate law enforcement or emergency agencies in the area.

Other security technologies for a home security alarm system might include an automatic fire alarm and other emergency alarms that cover a wide range of dangerous circumstances that operate in much the same way as the aforementioned burglar alarm with both the users of the security system and the security company being alerted. However, many new technologies are being implemented into security systems yearly. A new home security alarm system might be able to measure the weight and size of an object so that, for example, a house pet would not trigger a false alarm of the system, saving the security company time and freeing up resources for more dire emergencies.

Even in the event of a false alarm, a responder for the security company will make a call to the user of the home security alarm system to make sure that they are safe and to verify that the alarm was not in fact a false alarm. Previous versions of the home security alarm system were prone to many false alarms by pets, malfunctioning parts, or dying batteries, but newer types compensate for these problems with sensors designed specifically to assess the quality of the rest of the system. Before, the best protection that homes could hope to have was a guard dog. Now, own a home security alarm system that never sleeps, never rests, and automatically reacts to a myriad of dangers while displaying human judgment in assessing threats.

Learn the Laws

Learn the Laws Before Engaging in Self Defense Tactics

While self-defense isn’t a bad thing, there are certain limitations on what you can do and how you can defend yourself – depending on your state or country’s laws. You should always familiarize yourself with these laws, so that you can avoid legal troubles while trying to defend yourself.

First, before even getting a self-defense weapon, you should search online for what is legal and what is not in your area. For example, you may want to buy a stun gun, but if you live in Washington DC, it’s illegal to even own one, let alone use it.

Some places are less strict, such as Connecticut, where you can carry one if you get a permit. In many states, however, it’s perfectly legal to own one, and there are little to no major restrictions on them.

Knife laws vary even more than stun gun laws. Some states have almost no restrictions on owning them, like Texas, where the only illegal type of knife is a “gravity knife,” which uses inertia to open the blade.

Everything else, however, such as swords, switchblades, butterfly knives, etc. is perfectly legal to own. There is a distinction to be made between owning and carrying. When it comes to carrying knives, Texas is one of the most restrictive states.

You can’t carry, concealed or open, any of the following: Bowie knives, swords, throwing knives, daggers or other stabbing knives, or any knife with a blade over 5.5 inches long. So, before purchasing a knife, check your area’s laws, because they are all very different.

You should check the legality of firearms in your area. All states in the US allow some form or another of gun ownership, as long as you get your CCL (concealed carry license), you should be fine.

There are many restrictions on what kind of gun you can own, though, depending on your state. Surprisingly, Vermont has the most relaxed gun laws. You can open and concealed carry to your heart’s delight, as long as you’re a citizen of the US, even without a CCL.

Some countries in Europe are very harsh on gun laws, such as England. Others, like Switzerland, have annual mandatory firearm training, and as long as you’re not a criminal, you can own a firearm. You should still make sure you check the legality of firearms all the way down to your city’s legislature, as some cities can have differing laws from the state.

It’s not all about what you can and can’t own or carry, though. You have laws for using the weapons as well. For instance, you might have the right in some places to shoot at anyone running away on your property if they have your stolen possessions. Some other places might restrict the use of deadly force.

Lethal Self Defense for Survival

Lethal Self Defense for Survival

Sometimes, self-defense calls for more than a non-lethal incapacitation, and it comes down to a fight for your life. When that time comes, you want to be prepared for anything.

There are many lethal self-defense methods, but some are better than others – depending on the situation you’re in and depending on how much money you want to spend.

First, we have the common pocket knife. Pocket knives are available everywhere in the US and on Amazon. You can find them being sold at gas stations, Walmart, sporting goods stores, etc.

These can really fluctuate in price, but unless you’re collecting, you won’t need to spend more than $30 on a good pocket knife. Your pocket knife should be simple, and from an easily recognizable brand.

Smith and Wesson makes wonderful knives, available on Amazon for about $13. If you want to get a pocket knife with some extra versatility, you can also get a Leatherman tool for roughly $50.

The Leatherman Wingman is a wonderful example, as it has tons of tools – including a knife, screwdrivers, can openers, pliers, etc. You should make sure you check the laws of your state or country regarding how long the knife can be for you to carry it without some form of permit.

In some states it can be 3” or less, so if you were found to be carrying a 5” knife without a permit there, you could face a fine. Next are the fixed blade knives. These knives are often larger, but more reliable in an extended survival situation.

The big danger with fixed blade knives is falling for the flashy, gimmicky knives. You should always stay away from knives that are based on gimmicks. These things often overuse the word tactical, can be “zombie themed” by wrapping green paracord around the handle, and are poorly built.

For example, you may have seen a “survival hammer tactical hiking staff” for sale at almost $90. This is no doubt just a poorly built version of an obsolete weapon that will not help you in a survival or self-defense situation.

Other offenders include most katanas, swords, and machetes, unless the latter is from a trusted brand such as KA-BAR or SOG. A wonderful knife is the KA-BAR USMC knife. It’s well known for being one of the toughest knives around, serving US soldiers during WWII.

They’re a little pricy, but it’s well worth it. As with the pocket knives, you should be wary of the length of blade you can legally carry in your state or country, as most fixed blade knives are longer.

Finally, you can carry a gun on you. You’ll have to get a concealed carry license and follow the laws of your state or country, but it’s a very effective method of self-defense. I would recommend going to a gun show some time, walking around and talking to vendors about your first purchase.

If you’re going to conceal carry, you’ll want a compact handgun that you can fit in a small holster, so it’s not obvious that you’re carrying a firearm. In addition, you can go to a gun store and ask the people working there about what you’re looking for, and they will be happy to help.

The thing you need to know, regardless of your weapon of choice, is that lethal self defense requires a weapon, a determined mindset, and knowledge of the laws. Make sure you get training with your weapon of choice to find out how to properly eliminate an attacker in a survival situation.

Self Defense for Senior Citizens

Self Defense for Senior Citizens

Sometimes, if you’re an older person, you can’t fight hand to hand or with knives like younger people. Senior citizens have much different requirements for self-defense, but they can still easily defend themselves, and should – because they will be seen as easy targets.

The first option is pepper spray. It can be used at a distance at the press of a button, and causes serious pain to the attacker. You can get SABRE pepper spray on a keychain for about $10 on Amazon, allowing you to keep it on you wherever you go.

You can also get alarm keychains from Vigilant on Amazon for $17, which emit an alarm at 130 dB. This can be heard for almost a mile around you. These keychains can be activated at the press of a button as well, and have a manual whistle built in as a backup in case the button fails.

Many senior citizens can handle a firearm, as well. Veterans will not be afraid to conceal carry their own handgun, and it’s encouraged that they do, as long as they can shoot it accurately.

Smith and Wesson makes a wonderful .22lr compact pistol, and you can pick it up at most sporting goods stores for about $300. What makes .22lr a good senior defense round is that it’s very low recoil.

Some complain about the lack of “stopping power,” but any well placed shot means a chunk of metal flying through somewhere important. That will be enough to stop most attacker.

Any stragglers can be shot again, because the magazine holds 10 rounds. There are other low recoil calibers available as well, such as .380. Some senior citizens can make great use, if they must, of things that they carry on them regularly.

A walking cane is a great example. It’s long, hard, and can be used to beat petty thieves. Other items – such as pens and keys – can also be lodged in your attacker’s eyes.

The best options for self-defense for seniors are ones that don’t require close range altercations. These are more last ditch effort kinds of weapons. It’s preferable that you use something long range, or else it could very easily be snatched from you and used against you.

A stun gun, while effective, requires direct contact. It’s fine as a self-defense weapon, but if your attacker manages to grab your arm and take it out of your hand, you’re out of luck.

The Mandatory Warning

You are walking along when you see a suspicious looking character coming towards you. You adjust the hold on your umbrella or walking stick and prepare to defend yourself.

Aware of the need to protect yourself, as he approaches you suddenly hit out and break his head.

Good!

No! Bad! Very Bad!

The result? He lands up seriously sick in hospital.

And you end up seriously sick in jail!

Until proven otherwise, he is doing no wrong walking where he is. He has not at that point actually offered you harm. He is simply an innocent A.N.Other fully entitled to walk where he chooses, as long as it interferes with no-one.

You observe the possibility of an attack. Take several steps well to one side out of his direct path. If he simply continues on his way, on his original path, all well and good. No problem. He is (probably) not going to mug you.

But if now he changes direction towards you, the situation alters. You are under direct and immediate threat. You are in fear for your life. If you don’t take command you will end up mugged or raped.

With your weapon at the ready – that is, prepared to deliver an ‘invisible attack’ into his face – call out to him “Stay There! Don’t come any closer!”

If he continues towards you he is about to enter your Personal Space. He is offering you violence. His hand is declared and he means to attack you. If he hits you, you are finished.

As he comes into range of your particular weapon, with absolutely no warning hit him in a major target. Like the chops, the temple, the eye. In such a manner and with such force that his knees will buckle and he will sag down in front of you. WHACK!

If necessary, to secure the situation, hit him again (and again and again…) till you are manifestly safe, out of danger and beyond his ability to get up catch you and kill you.

If you attack him without reasonable excuse, you will be arrested.
If he attacks you (and there are no witnesses) he will probably get away with it.

ALWAYS establish your legality by giving this mandatory warning:

“Stay There! Don’t come any closer!”

Then – WHACK!

“It’s not over till it’s over – and even then it may not be!”

Self Defense –

Vital for some – but a Liability for You!

Important for YOUR success – but leading to YOUR defeat!

Slide your feet and demolish him – slide your feet and get kicked in the belly!

Move to your Left, WHACK! him – Move to your Right, be whacked yourself!

Move about – be crushed! Stand still – crush him!

To be skilled in Footwork – ten long intense years of study; but to be skilled in Winning – five minutes of study – Stand Still!

Practice your footwork– and Lose; Don’t – and win!

The most important factor in using footwork is – DON’T! You will surely be defeated and smashed.

For you, as a Beginner, this is most important advice. When you hit him, don’t move your feet.

If you misguidedly attend self defence classes, your instructors will pour scorn on these remarks. Show them a copy of the first part above those dots and you’ll see what I mean!

Explanation

You are a middle-aged unfit man or woman with no training or experience in the martial arts. You want to survive alive and unbroken in a mugging or rape attempt. You want that knowledge now, today – tonight indeed! You lack time, you lack fitness. You lack skill. You lack strength. You lack inbuilt ruthlessness. You don’t have a chance?

Wrong!

Simply because you don’t have a chance against a professional mugger or drugged rapist, YOU DO! You have every real chance of surviving, of breaking him.

You are aware that a weapon gives you that much more chance of coming through in more or less one piece. You MUST therefore carry a weapon. A valid legal weapon. But what is a legal weapon?

A walking stick, an umbrella, a dog chain or dog chew. Possibly a karatetsu P.E.S.T.

Don’t put any reliance whatsoever on rape alarms – why should an innocent bystander come to help you, a total stranger, and have his throat cut as well as yours? It just doesn’t make sense. Far safer for him to mobile phone the police, five miles away, and stay alive to try to identify your killer …

You must learn say three techniques with your favourite weapon – stick, umbrella, chew, whatever.

Your technique must be delivered from a standing still position. If you move your feet the (expert) mugger will laugh.

It must arise from an innocent, non-threatening position. It must not be held above your head as if about to hit him. Ideally (in your case) it must arise from your right rear and slash up through his left chops.

You must give absolutely no warning. This takes courage (and Autogenic Training!)

And then and only then can you step to your left and smash down into the angle of his right neck. Many times, many many many times …

To use footwork takes much, much practice, months indeed. If you are not immaculate in your move, he will counter you. He may be a Mugger but most assuredly he’s no mug.

If you don’t move your feet he MAY not twig on to your intention. And you must hit him in the instant before he starts his close attack. You must hit him first. You must in fact PRE-EMPT his coming attack and scatter his wits as you smash his chops. And only then, while he is momentarily witless do you proceed as Survival dictates – WHACK!

Footwork? What footwork? You want to survive, don’t you?

You do, don’t you?

Did I hear you say “Yes”?

Then forget about Footwork!
